Rensselaer County resident Elisa Sumner, of Troy, was arraigned on a five-count indictment, including one count of felony aggravated cruelty to animals, in Albany County Court on Monday, Dec. 19.

Prosecutors allege that Sumner intentionally killed a German Shepherd named “Nala” with “no justifiable purpose” at an Albany home near Lark and Spring streets in August 2022.

She is also accused of failing to provide proper sustenance for four other dogs under her care at the same home in October 2022, prosecutors said.

The animals were found living in filthy conditions inside the home, which was covered in urine, feces, and garbage, according to investigators.

Sumner is also charged with four counts of overdriving, torturing, and injuring animals by failing to provide proper sustenance, a misdemeanor.

Following her arraignment Monday, she was released to the supervision of probation until her next court appearance, which has not been scheduled yet.

As a condition of her release from jail, a judge barred Sumner from owning or taking custody of any animals.
